Task 2 / Ideate Solution for Problem Statement

INSTRUCTIONS

RESEARCH

We did more research on packaging materials to accommodate to the client's requirement (eco-friendly and microwavable). Since our problem statement has been established, we moved on to doing more research on the deliverables The Business School (TBS) students expected. Most of it are references to add to our moodboard and art direction.

PROCESS

Week 4

With the initial stage concluded, we could finally start on the art direction. In the beginning, we decided to split the references/art direction board into two: the client's suggestions and our proposing ideas. This process is mostly just to categorise our ideas and see if it's possible to align to TBS students' expectations.

On the side, we did some research on packaging materials/eco-friendliness so we could suggest to the clients. We also researched on different aspects of branding such as logo and advertising to better understand and decide the art direction.

Alongside with Angelyn, I sketched some ideas for the mascot design. I referred to some of my own references I found on Pinterest to gather some inspiration for the mascot design.

I made a few silhouette sketches of the mascot, mostly to grasp the overall shape and basic design.

Week 5

After receiving some feedback from Ms Lilian, we continued to refine the parts that we were previously working on. Since my design was still a silhouette, so I took them to further refine and add more details. I decided to pick two silhouettes to work on that some potential for better design.

I drew in different styles to test out which works better with our (still sort of vague) art direction. I dropped in Miro for feedback from my group members.

While waiting for Angelyn to provide her side of sketches, I was assigned to help out with the social media post. I looked for a few references to fit our art direction. Then, I made a few sketches as a sample of the posts we would create in the next task.

Reaching the end of the week, we gathered all our progress and references and placed them into our presentation slides. We also worked on our project document slides.

Week 6

It was time for presentation and we presented our art direction and designs in progress. The TBS students were happy with our current decision as it aligned with their expectations for the brand. There were a few kinks here and there, but nothing a quick touch up can't fix. Ms Lilian gave us feedback on our art direction, and overall we did satisfactory.

FEEDBACK

Week 4

Again, leave the project document for when you have finished most of your task, as the questions require your experience and knowledge to answer. For now, focus more on building your art direction.

Week 5

If packaging idea is not feasible, perhaps look for other possible choices that will be more attainable. The logo has some good ideas, but might want to think if the more illustrative logo might clash with the mascot. The illustrated mascot looks nice, but too typical. The design is commonly seen and might look similar to a lot of 80s mascot. The silhouette mascot is different and has some form of personality, but not quite there. The message behind your advertisement might not want to focus too much on sustainability, as it might seem like your jumping on the bandwagon with the recent marketing trend (making the message less effective).

Week 6

The colour palette has too many shades of green— suggestion is to either reduce it or split it to primary and secondary colours. The wordmark logo looks much better (though can use some tweaking). Find other graphical elements aside from pumpkin because it will be too much to pair it with the mascot and branding. The social media content is well-planned.

NEXT COURSE OF ACTION

  2. Mascot refinement
  3. Confirm packaging material and price
  4. Decide on the message/theme for the advertisement
  5. Look for more references for social media posts and flyer

  1. Start on Task 3
  2. Develop the ideas into prototype

REFLECTIONS

Experience

I felt a little more at ease for this task since it's something I'm familiar and used to doing it. The mascot as a requirement for branding was a blessing to me, since I liked doing character designs and I finally felt like I could show some form of potential. On the other hand, I wasn't skilled at designing for social media posts. It was simple enough to plan some contents for Instagram, but making the design was hard for me since I didn't like my sketches too much. Hopefully I can do better for the next task.

Observation

Most advertising messages these days try to incorporate the message of sustainability, regardless of how related it is to the brand or product. It does start to feel less impactful when the theme and message is spread out thinly.

Findings

I learned a little more about packaging materials that are available in Malaysia, and how some packaging— as environment-friendly as they are— are still not widely used because of the expensive processing and raw materials.
