INSTRUCTIONS

To-Do List:

  • Select an existing fashion niche and create a fashion app catered towards targeted audience
  • Share created app for feedback and point out possible amendments to existing prototype

Week 3

We started brainstorming for possible fashion niches we can use as our target audience. I personally am not too invested in the world of fashion (I just buy the nearest graphic/plain t-shirt I see in the shop), so it was hard giving any sort of suggestions. But since there was the four of us, we managed to have a list of niches to choose from.

Figure 1.1: List of fashion niches

After a few rounds of voting, we ended up with the fashion niche maximalism. Most of us are unfamiliar with the style itself, so we did some brief research into the fashion to hopefully further understand its uniqueness.

Week 4

We each gathered some information about maximalism and tried to look for people that are into the niche. It was somewhat fruitful— as we did know about the fashion better, but slowly realised that this fashion niche might not be popular in Malaysia because of its nature. I was already predicting some challenges in this project.

Figure 1.2: Gathered information about maximalism

One of the challenges would be selling items of maximalism fashion. Reusing old articles and layering upon one's outfit is essential for the fashion, which would be a disaster in Malaysia. Who would want to wear more than one layer of clothing in a hot and humid country?

We figured a workaround for the fashion niche, which is to sell accessories instead. As accessories can be stacked without trapping too much body heat, it would be a better solution then selling clothes.

Once we settled on what our products would be, we planned out our possible personas that would be interested in our prototype app.

Week 5

With our personas set in place, we moved on to create the user journey maps. We created one for each persona using the template that was available in Miro board. After that, we also made a possibly improved journey map for our app.

We also started collecting some references to compile a moodboard for our app.

Week 6

In this week, we got started with the wireframe, figuring out what we want and need in our app. We wrote down all the basic functions of an e-commerce app and brainstormed some other functions or activities that would keep the user engaged or interested in our app. When we deemed it enough, we tried to link all the pages and navigation so the wireframe would run smoothly.

Week 7

We attempted to create a low-fi of some pages to show the possible outlook of the app. We then compile all our progress into the slides for presentation.

Week 8

I realised we were quite behind compared to the other groups in class (no thanks to flu season), so I prompted everyone to finish the low-fi of the app by this week. We made significant progress then, and we got to work on the other branding stuff that we didn't manage to do before proposal. Ayshan was in charge of designing the logo while the others and I worked on building the prototype.

Week 9

We started creating the hi-fi of our app, which meant colours and pictures have to be added. We first worked on filling up the low-fi with colours and backgrounds. It was decided that each sections would have its own colour scheme, to create the variation that maximalism has but also not too many colours that it becomes confusing.

While working on the hi-fi, I realised we were missing a few more pages, so we had to design them at the same time. Once that was done, we started to link the pages and animate them to make them functional. I was in charge of figuring out the carousel animation. Surprisingly, it was an easy to figure it out, but quite a tedious task. I left the game animations to Shofwa and Metta. We managed to finish the prototype just in time for field work survey.

Week 12

Shofwa had secured an interviewee she could meet physically, which was a boon for us. Ayshan had a candidate, but they were unavailable to attend an interview at this point of time. We couldn't find other suitable interviewees, so we resorted to an online survey instead. We distributed the survey to our friends so we would have insights on how well our app works.

Week 14

We gathered the survey results and summarised them into our final presentation slides. We also recorded the video of our prototype and prepared other necessary materials before presentation day.

FEEDBACK

Week 7

Interesting to see the fashion niche you are proposing. Do look for your possible interviewees that would be interested in this style as you might have trouble finding one in further weeks. Looking forward to see how your fashion app will turn out.

Week 14

Nice to see that you managed to mix the maximalism vibes with the app which is typically minimalistic. I can understand the critiques some of your respondents have made and it would make your app much better if these are improved upon. But overall, a good job in making the app.

REFLECTIONS

Receiving the brief for this module (and particularly, the project) made me a little nervous, since we are designing an app for fashion apparels. Adding on the fact that we had to pick a niche, I didn't have that much confidence in myself to make it successful. I struggled sometimes during the project since I didn't like the maximalist fashion, but it was a necessary mental barrier to overcome if I don't want it affecting my capabilities.

I was grateful for all my group members for pitching in, despite the flu season happening and made each of us sick early in the semester (I was sick TWICE-). It was thanks to their cooperation that we managed to get this project done, though we could probably do better in this aspect if weren't for unfavourable circumstances.
